  The construction of characteristic town in Zhejiang Province had fully initiated in 2015. A total of 79 provincial characteristic towns in two batches had been approved respectively in June 2015 and January 2016. A large number of characteristic towns with excellent ecological environment and distinctive industry features have emerged, such as Dream Town and Cloud Town.

  At present, China's macroeconomic development has entered a transition period, the urbanization continues to improve, and the real estate destocking becomes a serious problem in the third and fourth tier cities. In 2015, Premier Li Keqiang in the government work report pointed out that "public entrepreneurship and innovation" would be developed to be one of "double engines" for China's economy to move forward continuously. In this context, the previous extensive regional development model is difficult to follow, while the characteristic town focuses on guiding the flexible and diverse development model, emphasizing the "adjustment of measures to local conditions", and paying attention to the resource intensification, which is conducive to the formation of core competitiveness in the current regional competition.

  In July 2016, China's Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, National Development and Reform Commission, and Ministry of Finance jointly issued the "Circular on Development of Characteristic Town", with the purpose of developing about 1,000 distinctive and vibrant characteristic towns oriented on leisure travel, trade logistics, modern manufacturing, educational technology, traditional culture and beautiful livableness. The characteristic town construction had officially initiated nationwide. In October 2016, National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Construction of Beautiful Characteristic Town", supporting the construction and development of characteristic town.

  China Investment Consulting (CIC) issues the "Development and Strategy Consulting Report on China Characteristic Town Construction During 2019-2023" has twelve chapters.
