With the improved level of China economic development, people pay more and more attention to the health of themselves, medical service consumption has broken through the concept of “treatment-seeking”, medical consumption motive presents multi-level and diversified characteristics; hairdressing, plastic, and rehabilitation services are popular quietly, potential demands for the health consultation and family health care, etc. increase continuously, and phenomena such as heating of health products market, appearance of special medical service, etc. open up more and more market for hospitals.
By the end of 2007, there were 315 thousand health institutions in the whole country, including hospitals 19,900, health centers 40 thousand, community health service centers (station) 24 thousand, maternal child health hospitals (institute, station) 3007. Compared with 2003, health institutions increased 24 thousand , of which: community health service centers (station), health supervision institutions and hospitals increased, MCH institutions, and disease prevention and control institutions changed not too much, township health centers continued to decrease with the township adjustment.
By the end of 2007, health personnel were to 5700 thousand, rural doctors and health workers were about 950 thousand. Compared with 2003, health workers increased by 425 thousand (annual average growth 1.95%), rural doctors and health workers increased 80 thousand. In 2007, health technicians were 4680 thousand, of which: licensed (assistant) doctors 2040 thousand, registered nurses 1470 thousand. Compared with 2003, health technicians increased 374 thousand (annual average growth 2.10%), licensed (assistant) doctors increased 172 thousand, registered nurses increased 204 thousand, increment of doctors with five years’ experience and nurses accounted for 88% of total health personnel. Licensed (assistant) doctors per thousand people increased from 1.48 in 2003 to 1.56 in 2007, registered nurses per thousand people increased from 1 to 1.12.
By the end of 2007, beds in national hospitals and health centers were to 3279 thousand, increased by 324 thousand than 2003, annual average growth was 2.6%. Beds in hospitals were 2587 thousand, increased by 317 thousand than that in 2003, annual average growth was 3.3%; beds in health centers were 692 thousand, increased by 6000 than that in 2003. Beds in hospitals and health centers per thousand people increased from 2.34 in 2003 to 2.54 in 2007.
China private, China-foreign joint venture, joint-stock etc. hospitals account for 10% of total national hospitals, the quantity is less and can’t meet the needs of the people for multi-level and various medical care. The state will take effective and encouraging policies further to guide the social forces to participate in the development of medical and health service, and will macroscopically form the medical service pattern with coexistence of different ownership hospitals such as public hospitals, non-governmental hospitals, private hospitals, joint-stock hospitals, etc., and fair and orderly competition.
China hospital construction develops rapidly. With the deepening of China medical reform and opening up of medical market, China will lift the peak of investment in hospital.
